Nature

Lac de Bonlieu is a glacial lake in a forested area, overlooked by a rocky ridge. It is approximately 700 m long and 300 m wide. The Belvédère de la Ronde offers a viewpoint overlooking Lac de Bonlieu. The lake is one of the sources of the Hérisson River, which flows by the Cascades du Hérisson.

Activities

The Cascades du Hérisson comprise seven waterfalls along a 3.7 km route with an elevation difference of 255 m. A shorter 3.3 km hike can begin on the shore of Lac de Bonlieu. A horse-riding trail called “grand 8” is documented in the Lac de Bonlieu Natura 2000 site.

Notes

As part of environmental protection measures, swimming in Lac de Bonlieu is prohibited. Visitors may bring dogs to Lac de Bonlieu, but they must be kept on a leash.

History and Culture

The church in the hamlet of Bouzailles in Bonlieu houses a painted polychrome wooden statue of Saint Claude. The statue of Saint Claude dates from the last quarter of the 17th century and has been protected as a listed object since 1 July 1997.

The Chartreuse de Bonlieu was founded in the 12th century in the valley of Lac de Bonlieu. During the French Revolution, the Chartreuse de Bonlieu was sold as national property. The remaining buildings of the Chartreuse de Bonlieu were set on fire by the Germans in August 1944 during the battles of the Liberation.
