Baume-les-Messieurs is home to Saint-Pierre de Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey, the reculée, the waterfalls and La Peyrouse.

Culture

Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey; its first written mention dates back to 869. Saint-Pierre de Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey is open year-round. A guided tour includes access to the abbey’s three courtyards, the abbey church, the Flemish altarpiece and the funerary chapel.

The Flemish altarpiece of Baume-les-Messieurs is kept in the Saint-Pierre abbey church. The work dates from the early 16th century and was produced in a workshop in Flanders.

In La Peyrouse, the former parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, including the cemetery wall, has been fully protected as a historic monument by decree of 29 July 1998. A Gallo-Roman structure stood at the site of the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the cemetery; the site has presumably been continuously used as a church site since Late Antiquity.

Les Drôlipathes & La Chaudronnette operates a workshop with a boutique in Baume-les-Messieurs, which is open by appointment.

Nature

Le Cirque de Baume is designated as a Natura 2000 site. The Reculée de Baume-les-Messieurs is a typical karst formation created by the erosion of the limestone plateaus of the Jura Massif. The cliffs bordering the reculée reach heights of more than 200 metres in places.

The Cascade de Baume-les-Messieurs is a tufa waterfall fed by the Dard. The waterfall can be accessed free of charge year-round. A large free car park for buses and cars is located nearby.

Visiting

The Grottes de Baume can be visited from April to September exclusively as part of guided tours. Thus, during this period, a guided tour is the prescribed framework for visiting the caves.

Routes

The La Reculée de Baume-les-Messieurs route leads via the Échelles de Crançot to the Belvédère des Roches. The route also provides access to the Croix de Suchot viewpoint, overlooking the reculée.
