Barretaine is an elevated village on the edge of the Jura’s first plateau. From the Croix du Dan viewpoint, you can see across the Dole plain and the Burgundy hills beyond Beaune and Dijon.

Culture
The present-day Église Saint-Savin de Barretaine has a bell dated 1782. The former Église Saint-Savin de Barretaine was demolished in 1769 and rebuilt elsewhere in the village. A retable painting in the Église Saint-Savin de Barretaine depicts the former Saint-Savin chapel. Barretaine is believed to date back to the 9th century.
The Maison de Louis Pasteur museum and the historic site of Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Baume-les-Messieurs are located nearby.
Further afield in the region are the historic site of Abbaye de Balerne, the historic site of Abbaye de Rosières, Mont Begon, Montagne de Fresse, Mont Poupet and the Pointe de la Vuarde summit.
Landscape
Stage 7 of the Échappée Jurassienne climbs uphill to the Croix du Dan; from there, it offers views of Poligny and the Culée de Vaux.
