Culture and History

The Maison natale de Xavier Bichat is partially protected as a historic monument; it was listed on 18 May 1990. The protected elements include the façades and roofs, a fireplace slab on the ground floor bearing the name Claude Bichat, the fireplace on the upper floor with its slab, and a livestock watering trough separated from the house by the path.

Nature and Water

The entire municipal area of Thoirette lies within the “Petite Montagne du Jura” Natura 2000 site. During the restoration of La Lône, more than 2.5 hectares of wetlands were newly created. La Lône is a side channel of the Ain in Thoirette-Coisia that was fully restored in 2021.

The Sentier de la Lône runs along the banks of the Ain in Thoirette. The project was carried out in cooperation with the CPIE (Centre permanent d’initiatives pour l’environnement) du Haut Jura; the CPIE’s objective is to provide environmental education for the public.

Paddling and Cycling

Paddling starts at the launch pontoon in Thoirette. From the leisure centre in Thoirette, a round-trip paddling route leads to Lac de Conflans and takes one hour.

The Tour du lac de Coiselet cycling loop is 30.5 km long. It is signposted with green cycle-route marker 16; the car park at Thoirette town hall serves as the access point for the Tour du lac de Coiselet.
