Gigny is defined by the Abbaye de Gigny and its long monastic history. The Abbaye de Gigny was founded around 890 by Bernon. In 909, Bernon set out with twelve monks – six from Gigny and six from Baume – to found Cluny.

The restored church of the Abbaye de Gigny is a remarkable example of Romanesque art. The Church of Saint-Taurin of the Abbaye de Gigny was classified as a historic monument by decree of 10 September 1913. The enclosure and retaining walls, floors, subfloors and archaeological remains of the site of the Abbaye de Gigny were also listed as historic monuments by decree of 5 February 2009.

On the Sentier du patrimoine de Gigny, visitors can follow in the footsteps of the monks who lived in the abbey. The trail also provides insights into village life in Gigny over the centuries.

Hiking

The Gigny PR® – Belvédère du Fays circular hiking trail starts at the abbey church. The easy, 9.4-kilometre hike takes two and a half hours and leads to a viewpoint overlooking the village built around the abbey.

The Belvédère du Fays is located in a clearing reached via a section of trail along the edge of a cliff.

Visiting

Guided tours of the village and the abbey church of the Abbaye de Gigny are available by reservation at 03 84 25 27 47. There is a small step at the entrance to the Abbaye de Gigny; access is possible for wheelchair users with assistance, and a designated accessible parking space is available.

The Abbaye de Gigny is open daily all year round. In winter, opening hours are reduced, with closing at 6:00 p.m. instead of the usual 6:30 p.m.
