Things to do
The PR® circular hiking trail Reculée de Gizia starts in the Châtel district of Gizia, is 6.1 kilometres long, takes around two hours and is considered easy. It combines the themes of geology, history and cultural heritage, as well as nature.
The route from Châtel leads to the Belvédère du Chanelet, which offers views of the reculée and the Bresse. From there, you can see the entire reculée, the village of Gizia and, in the distance, the Bresse Bourguignonne plain. The route passes the church and the town hall before continuing for 250 metres along the river beside the D 134.
Culture and History
The Église Saint-Etienne de Châtel was under the authority of the priory of Châtel, founded by monks from Gigny. It appears to have been built at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century; in 1780, a bell portal was added in place of the former wall bell tower. Since 23 August 2013, the church has been listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree.
A park and gardens surround the monastery and the Église Saint-Etienne de Châtel. The village church of Gizia dates from 1808 and has a bell gable that is atypical for the region.
