Landscape
Saint-Claude lies at the confluence of the Bienne and Tacon rivers. Surrounded by the Monts Chabot and Bayard, the region is characterised by mountains and waterways.
Those wishing to experience nature in its various forms will find more than 150 km of marked trails for hikes in the mid-mountain region within a 10 km radius of Saint-Claude. Around the town, visitors can also discover the gorges of a mountain stream, glacial potholes, flora and developed landscapes.
Nature
The Gorges du Flumen in Saint-Claude are classified as a natural heritage site of national importance. Their waterfalls can be reached via a single path after a hike of around one hour; the main waterfall plunges more than 20 metres.
Culture
Saint-Claude Cathedral is protected as a historic monument and was built between the 14th and 18th centuries. The Cathedral of Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew in Saint-Claude also houses a 16th-century altarpiece, a 19th-century Romantic organ, 15th-century choir stalls and a chapel dedicated to Saint Claude.
The Musée de la Pipe et du Diamant displays historical tools and machines that illustrate the atmosphere of Saint-Claude’s pipe-making workshops. It presents a collection of pipes from the Haut-Jura and around the world, and also includes a reconstructed grinding workshop brought to life by automata, as well as an exhibition of rough and cut stones.
The Musée de l’Abbaye / donations Guy Bardone – René Genis is located on the site of the former abbey of Saint-Claude. It combines medieval remains with an extensive collection of 19th- and 20th-century paintings.
The Maison du Peuple in Saint-Claude was inaugurated in 1910 and served as an economic and educational centre with a theatre, cinema, library and people’s university.
Routes
The Ligne des Hirondelles connects Dole and Saint-Claude along a railway line more than 120 kilometres long.
Cuisine
The culinary offerings in Saint-Claude include Jura cheeses such as Comté, Morbier and Bleu du Haut-Jura, as well as local specialities such as chèvre salée, frog’s legs, fondue and papet.
