Culture
The Tour du Zouave Coco was completely restored in 1988. Associated with it is a circular earth mound that was three to four metres high, enclosed by dry-stone walls and topped with a narrow terrace. From there, visitors could see across the Arbois valley and the Arsures corridor.
The Sentier du Trousseau passes through the vineyards in the Arbois area and provides access to Montigny-lès-Arsures’ architectural heritage; the village is known as the capital of the Trousseau grape variety.
The Église Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand de Montigny-lès-Arsures has been listed as a historic monument by decree of 2 March 1981.
The château is listed in its entirety as a historic monument by decree of 23 August 2013. It is described as a fortified complex built in 1408 by an adviser to Jean-sans-Peur, with a rectangular layout, four corner towers, a water-filled moat and a drawbridge.
History
The Viaduc de Montigny is a curved railway viaduct measuring 230 metres in length and 28 metres in height, with eleven arches. It forms part of the Ligne des Hirondelles between Dole and Saint-Claude.
The Mouchard–Pontarlier railway line opened as a single-track line on 15 November 1862 and was converted to double track in 1900.
On 25 January 1871, Zouave Coco held off an enemy unit near Montigny-lès-Arsures during the retreat of the French troops until he had exhausted his ammunition.
