Rochefort-sur-Nenon combines striking cliffs along the Doubs with traces of a long local history. The protected Rocher du Saut-de-la-Pucelle site includes a chapel and the ruins of the town’s former fortifications. The Grotte de la Mère Clochette lies in the cliff face lining the Doubs; access to it is currently difficult.
The Notre-Dame de la Consolation chapel was built above the cliffs in 1620 and restored in 1827. As early as the first centuries AD, Hèbe was an important settlement and a crossroads of the roads between Chalon-sur-Saône and Besançon, as well as between Auxonne and Salins. A castellum built on the mountain of Rochefort protected both the ancient routes and the crossing over the Doubs.
The cave known as the Trou de la Mère Clochette also points far back into history: archaeological remains from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age have been found there.
