Culture and history

The Historic City of Toledo was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. It preserves an outstanding historical heritage shaped by twenty centuries of history and covers approximately 260 hectares. This heritage also includes evidence of the coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures in the Middle Ages.

The Parque Arqueológico de Carranque is located in the province of Toledo. The site preserves more than 1,500 years of history – from the heyday of a Roman villa to its conversion into a medieval sacred space. The imperial-era villa includes the Casa de Materno, a single-storey residence connected to a torcularium and used to produce olive oil and wine.

Toledo itself also preserves traces of the Roman period: the Parque Escolar Circo Romano contains the remains of a Roman circus dating from the 1st century. In Consuegra, the Castillo de la Muela stands beside the local windmills. The Alfar also preserves a pottery workshop used until the 1970s, with old agricultural equipment and a small craft exhibition.

The Rosa del Azafrán festival in Consuegra has been held since 1963 on the last full weekend in October. It combines gastronomy, crafts, history and folk traditions.

Cityscape and paths along the Tagus

The Mirador del Valle de Toledo is located on the opposite bank of the Tagus, on the slope of the Valle, and offers direct views of the walled city and its monumental silhouette. The Senda Ecológica runs along the riverbank and circles Toledo's historic centre. Another crossing over the river is provided by the municipal Barca de Pasaje: from 1 April to 15 September, it enables a free crossing of the Tagus to the opposite bank.

The guided Ruta Monumental de Oropesa includes the palace, castle, churches, monasteries, the historic Hospital de San Juan Bautista with its tourist office and museum, as well as sections of the walled complex.

Nature and hiking routes

The Parque Nacional de Cabañeros protects habitats of large birds of prey, black storks and other endangered species in the provinces of Toledo and Ciudad Real. The municipalities of Los Navalucillos and Hontanar in the province of Toledo lie within this national park.

In the Sierra de San Vicente in the province of Toledo, visitors can observe, among other species, cinereous vultures, Spanish imperial eagles, black storks, genets and lynxes. The Senda Viriato runs through the sierra for 140 kilometres, providing access to its natural, historical and cultural heritage.

Wine and regional routes

The Ruta del Vino Méntrida-Toledo offers visits to vineyards and representative wineries of D.O. Méntrida, as well as guided wine tastings and tastings of regional products. The route passes through 14 municipalities in the province of Toledo.

The Camino Manchego begins in Ciudad Real, reaches Toledo and connects there with the Camino del Sureste.

Practical information

The AVANT high-speed train from Madrid-Atocha reaches Toledo in 25 minutes. Within the city, there are steep inclines as well as surfaces made of paving stones and cobblestones. Comfortable footwear providing a firm grip is recommended for walking on uneven ground.
