Burujón among Barrancas, Churches and Festivals

On the northern shore of the Castrejón Reservoir lies the Barrancas de Castrejón y Calaña natural monument. It extends across the municipal areas of Burujón, Albarreal de Tajo and La Puebla de Montalbán. Within the Barrancas, the reservoir provides a refuge for numerous bird species. Pico del Cambrón is the highest point in the Barrancas and one of the area's best natural viewpoints.

Nature

The Barrancas extend for approximately one kilometre. Access to the natural monument is free; a permit is required for organised excursions. The main access to the Barrancas is via the CM-4000 road between kilometres 24.5 and 26. There is a car park set up by Burujón Town Council. Access is possible on foot, by bicycle or by vehicle, although restrictions may apply on days with high visitor numbers.

Culture and History

The Ermita de San Pantaleón dates from the late 17th century and was built in the Mudéjar style. It includes a side aisle that was formerly used as a baptistery, as well as part of the central nave of the former parish church.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol is an avant-garde 20th-century building completed in 1961. This church houses a relic of San Pantaleón consisting of a bone fragment.

The Palacio de los Condes de Cifuentes preserves its coat of arms on the tower façade. According to tradition, King Felipe IV stopped for one night at the Palacio de los Condes de Cifuentes.

Festivals

The Semana Cultural takes place from late April to early May and includes leisure activities, a classic car gathering and a medieval market. The patron saint's festival in honour of the saint is celebrated from 25 to 28 July. The celebrations in the Barrancas include a traditional mass and the sale of Roscas.
