El Puente del Arzobispo – Ceramics, the Tagus and Historic Buildings

Culture and Craftsmanship

The museum space at the Centro de Interpretación de la Cerámica houses a collection of more than 200 ceramic pieces made in El Puente del Arzobispo, dating from the 15th century to the present day. The Centro de Interpretación de la Cerámica offers the public guided tours adapted for people with reduced mobility. An interactive pottery and painting workshop complements the programme with demonstrations and workshops for groups by prior arrangement.

Riverside Setting and Historic Buildings

The banks of the Tagus and the river itself are now designed as a leisure and recreation area for locals and visitors. Here, you can admire and enjoy the impressive bridge and the Tagus as it runs through the town.

The Puente de Piedra was commissioned in 1380 by the then Archbishop of Toledo and Duke of Estrada, D. Pedro Tenorio. It is built of granite and has round arches that become smaller towards the sides. The central arch is approximately 14.5 metres above the water’s surface.

The town’s architectural history also includes the Iglesia de Santa Catalina, a Gothic-Mudéjar religious building from the 14th century that was later remodelled in the 18th century. The Rollo de Justicia is a Gothic monument made of granite, dating from the 15th century. The Iglesia del Convento de Franciscanos dates from the 17th century.

Mills and Trails

The Molinos de Santa Catalina now comprise an impressive large building with at least seven structures, four water conduits and up to eleven millstones; each millstone has its own name. Stage 28 of the Camino Natural Tajo runs in the vicinity of El Puente del Arzobispo along the Arroyo de los Frailes on a fresh riverside walk.
