Hormigos: Alberche Landscape and Historical Traces

Nature and cultural history meet along the Alberche River and at Hormigos's historic buildings. The Alberche River flows through Hormigos; there are numerous campsites and picnic areas along its banks.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé is a historic religious building from the 16th century and an example of traditional architecture from Toledo. Its main chapel is built of dressed stone and covered by a ribbed vault. The building is considered a rural structure made of rammed earth and brick; three naves are separated by round arches and columns from the early Renaissance.

Nuestra Señora de la Higuera is considered a seated depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Child, apparently made of granite and possibly dating from the 12th century. The Museo Aureleliano Bermúdez displays tools, objects and photographs from Hormigos's agricultural and cultural past. The Castillo de Hormigos is a medieval fortress; its remains recall the strategic importance of the municipality in centuries past.

Nature

The ZEC Sotos del río Alberche protected area also includes land in Hormigos, covering 47.52 hectares there. The Fresno de la Fuente de la Canal is an old ash tree standing almost 22 metres tall. Berrocal is a named peak in the area around Hormigos.

Paths and Activities

The Alberche landscapes near Hormigos are suitable for hiking and photography. The area around the Alberche River near Hormigos offers opportunities for walks and peaceful routes. The Senda Ecológica del Barranco de Hormigos is a linear path that runs parallel to the Casasola stream through a park-like dehesa woodland and connects the Alberche riverbank with the Casasola spring.

Camping El Paraíso is located in a wooded area on the Alberche River and offers opportunities for fishing, swimming in the river, peaceful walks, quad biking and sporting activities. A hiking route from Hormigos passes the visitable remains of the Antigua Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Higuera from the 15th century near the former settlement of Higuera del Campo.

Festivals

The festival in honour of the Virgen de la Higuera is held on the last Sunday in May and includes a procession and religious events. This procession goes beyond Hormigos towards the former settlement of Higuera del Campo and the remains of its former hermitage. The patron saint festivities of San Bartolomé take place on 24 and 25 August and include traditional, cultural and religious activities.

Surrounding Area

The surrounding area of Hormigos is home to the Castillo de Escalona, a castle, and the Monasterio Carmelita de la Santísima Encarnación, a monastery. The Castillo de San Silvestre, a ruin, is also located nearby. Further afield in the surrounding region lies the Palacio De Villena, a palace. Lancharrasa and Pelados are named peaks in the wider surrounding region; Cruces is a named mountain there.
