Mar de Ontígola is a historic reservoir built in the 16th century on the orders of Philip II to supply the gardens of Aranjuez. The Ruta del Mar de Ontígola runs through the area surrounding the reservoir and is suitable for hiking and nature observation.

Natural area

34.96 hectares of the Salobral de Ocaña Microrreserve are located in Ontígola. The Salobral de Ocaña Microrreserve is designated as a protected natural area in the Microrreserve category and belongs to the Natura 2000 site “Estepas salinas de Toledo” (ZEC ES4250008). Salobral de Ocaña is a seasonally water-bearing saline depression that is home to halophytic communities as well as endemic and threatened species and specially protected plant habitats.

History and routes

The ruins of Castillo de Oreja stand on a steep hill beside the River Tagus. The castle formed an important medieval border fortress and was one of the most significant border sites of the Middle Ages in the region.

Access to Castillo de Oreja is free; the ruins can be reached on foot via rural paths with a steep descent on the final section. Several routes lead there from Ontígola, Noblejas or Colmenar de Oreja through Soto de Oreja.

From the summit of the hill at Castillo de Oreja, there are views of the River Tagus, Mar de Ontígola and the landscape of the province of Toledo.

Local history

Ontígola is mentioned in 1139 as part of the territory of Oreja. Later, the town came under the jurisdiction of the town of Ocaña, which belonged to the Order of Santiago.

In the mid-18th century, Aranjuez financed work on the church of Ontígola; materials were used that had been intended for the reconstruction of the Royal Site after the major fire of 1748.

Culture and events

The Teatro Municipal de Ontígola is located in the Centro Cultural “11 de Marzo” at Calle Campo 1. Since its opening in 2000, it has hosted, among other events, theatre performances, cultural weeks, lectures, dance and circus events.
