Corral de Almaguer – Culture, Wine Country and Festivals
Corral de Almaguer can be discovered from several perspectives: architecture, trails, landscapes and traditional festivals give the town a variety of facets.
Culture and History
The Ayuntamiento, designed by Ventura Rodríguez, stands on the Plaza Mayor of Corral de Almaguer. The Plaza Mayor itself is designed in the Neoclassical style. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has three naves; the transept contains a Late Gothic rib vault.
The Casa de los Collados is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The building is arranged around a courtyard with three arcades, while several rooms have an Artesonado wooden ceiling with polychrome paintings. The archaeological site of Cerro del Gollino is open to visitors; access is via a rural road located 3 km from Corral de Almaguer. The historical and spiritual heritage of Corral de Almaguer also includes the Convento de San José, together with other religious buildings.
Trails and Landscapes
The Sendero Virgen de la Muela is officially designated as the PR-TO 02 hiking trail. It begins in the town centre and passes through a landscape of vineyards and grain fields. Along the way, the trail passes the Ermita de la Muela, the ruins of a medieval mill and the Ermita de San Isidro; the Río Riánsares flows alongside the route. For day planning, the character of the trail, the landscape and the stops along the route can be considered separately.
Traditions
Los Mayos is a night-time singing tradition in Corral de Almaguer that takes place from 30 April into 1 May. During this singing procession, the route begins at the church and ends at the Ermita de la Virgen de la Muela.
The annual celebrations of San Antón include a traditional bonfire and a music event with local DJs. They also include a Mass in honour of San Antonio Abad and San Sebastián at the Ermita de San Antón, an animal blessing and a procession with the images of San Antón and San Sebastián.
Festivals and Wine
The patron saint's festival on the third weekend of May includes a procession in honour of the patron saint, fireworks and a popular festival. The celebrations in August combine a procession in honour of the saint with a popular festival and fireworks.
The Fiesta de la Vendimia includes grape treading and a wine tasting, and was held for its 25th edition. A pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Muela includes a procession and an outdoor meal.
When comparing a holiday apartment in Corral de Almaguer, you can consider travel dates, room category and cancellation policies side by side. Culture, the hiking trail, the pilgrimage and festival dates can be weighted separately when planning your own trip, without combining the different occasions into a single type of journey.
