Urda has been a destination for pilgrimages on foot to the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz for centuries. Many pilgrims walk from nearby towns and other parts of Spain.
Pilgrimage and Routes
Urda is part of the Camino de Santiago Manchego, a 135-kilometre pilgrimage route with five official stages that connects Ciudad Real with Toledo. The total length and the official division into stages provide different planning perspectives: you can consider a single section or view the entire route as one continuous trail.
Traditions
Urda's Feria y Fiestas takes place every year from 27 September to 1 October in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz; 29 September is the main day.
Every year on 8 December, Urda hosts a competition in which participants prepare a pan of Migas. There is also a traditional handicrafts market and various gastronomic tastings. For planning purposes, you can classify the two fixed dates separately by season and type of event.
Culture
The Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz has a very simple exterior and an exceptionally richly decorated Baroque interior. The main altar of the Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz dates from the 17th century. The Basílica Menor del Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica on 21 February 2021.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista contains a reredos in the presbytery depicting Saint John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. The reredos also includes scenes of the Passion, death and Resurrection of Christ.
The parish church of San Juan Bautista in Urda was apparently built on the foundations of an earlier church, around the time the Fuero was granted in 1286. A chapel in Urda is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception. When making your cultural selection, you can distinguish between spatial character, iconographic programme, architectural history and Marian dedication.
Nature
The natural surroundings of Urda are suitable for walks among heathland, olive groves and country paths. For daily planning, this landscape aspect can be treated as a separate type of activity alongside route distance, cultural themes and festival dates. In Urda, country paths, festivals held on fixed dates and churches thus represent different forms of a stay; walks, events and cultural visits can be considered separately.
When comparing a holiday apartment in Urda, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can help organise your view of the respective offers. You can compare this information with the planned festival period, 8 December, individual route sections or cultural themes.
