Culture and Festive Tradition

Camuñas can be discovered on several levels through Pecados y Danzantes. The festival is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional and has been declared intangible cultural heritage in the category Bien Inmaterial as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The origins of this tradition are placed between the 16th and 17th centuries. During the Corpus Christi celebration, Pecados y Danzantes in Camuñas is recorded as ritual open-air theatre; the silent performance includes both groups passing through the town.

At the Centro de Interpretación Pecados y Danzantes, an educational tour presents documents, photographs, historical costume pieces and explanatory panels about the fiesta. Six costumes representing different figures from the festival are also exhibited there. Seven audiovisual contributions about the fiesta are subtitled in Spanish and English.

History and Architectural Heritage

From 1794, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was planned according to designs by Juan de Villanueva; its construction was part of the proposed project. The church has simple, restrained Renaissance and neoclassical architecture, as well as unusually steep slate roofs.

The Ermita de la Vera Cruz is considered the oldest building in Camuñas. Its existence is mentioned in a 1655 report about the visit of two members of the Order of Saint John. The Hermandad de la Vera Cruz is primarily responsible for maintaining and cleaning the chapel and, as a brotherhood, organises the religious acts of Semana Santa de Camuñas.

Another historic landmark is the Molino de viento La Unión. The windmill is already depicted in an illustration of Camuñas published in 1769; it is said to be more than 250 years old. In 2003, it was recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Admission is free, but a visit must be arranged in advance through the Centro de Interpretación.

Landscape and Views

From Cerro de San Cristóbal, a 360-degree panorama stretches across the La Mancha plain to the first foothills of the Montes de Toledo. A short trip to this viewpoint offers views as well as the opportunity to experience sunrises and sunsets.
