Los Navalmorales: Nature Trails and Historic Buildings

The Ruta del Boquerón de los Navalmorales is a hiking trail through the surrounding mountain landscape, offering expansive natural panoramas. Los Navalmorales lies within the sphere of influence of Cabañeros National Park, known for its Mediterranean mountain forests and biodiversity. Another hiking reference is the Sendero El Calancho, which is designated as a hiking route in connection with Los Navalmorales.

The town’s natural attractions can therefore be experienced through a specific route, the surrounding mountain landscape and another designated hiking trail. The cultural section, by contrast, focuses on religious buildings, historic ruins, a Baroque fountain and evidence of the town’s history. Both subject areas remain clearly distinguishable and give the exploration of Los Navalmorales different thematic focuses.

Culture

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua dates from the 16th century. The parish church of Los Navalmorales is a three-nave building; construction of the main chapel and the side chapels began in 1593. The bell tower is a 17th-century building in the Herrerian tradition and is known as "buena moza".

The Ermita de los Remedios is the oldest religious building in the town and was inaugurated on 2 October 1579. It has a rectangular nave made of rubble masonry and brick. The Ermita de San Antonio is divided into two naves, separated by three round arches. The Fuente de los Seis Caños is a Baroque fountain dating from the 17th century. Remains of the original walls of the former Convento de Capuchinos have been preserved.

The cultural sites can be distinguished according to their character: churches and chapels display various forms of religious architecture, the fountain represents Baroque design, and the surviving walls point to a former monastery. This keeps each landmark and its respective features recognizable, rather than allowing them to merge into a general image of the town.

History and Festivals

The patron saint festivities in honor of the Santísimo Cristo de las Maravillas took place from 12 to 17 September and included, among other events, a solemn mass and a procession in honor of the Cristo de las Maravillas.

The Feria de Arte y Artesanía Jara y Montes de Toledo was traditionally held in mid-August; in 2009, it took place from 13 to 16 August. It is classified as an official trade fair of Castilla-La Mancha and featured more than fifty craftspeople.

The festival dates and the fair form part of the event history of Los Navalmorales and provide a chronological accent alongside the older buildings. A column bearing the inscription "EN DOS DE JVLIO DE 1665 AÑOS" was erected in 1665 and now stands at a roundabout where Olivares, Numancia, Virgen de la Asunción, don Caralipo Pérez de Vargas and Colombia streets meet.
