Camarena – Churches, Pilgrimage Route and Wine Tradition

Culture and History

Camarena is home to the Carroza de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, a carved and gilded work created in the 18th century. Due to the quality of its execution and its decorative impact, the Carroza is considered unique.

The Ermita del Cristo de la Sangre combines elements of the Toledo Mudéjar style on the exterior with a distinctly Baroque interior. Its original Baroque main altarpiece occupies the entire rear wall of the temple. At the same time, the Ermita is the only chapel in Camarena that has been preserved both as a building and as a place of worship. It is considered to have been built at the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century. Behind the altarpiece, the restored Camarín serves as a small museum.

The Church of San Juan Bautista also combines several historical building periods. The main chapel and the Chapel of La Caridad feature Gothic structures with Renaissance details from the late 15th century. The church's three naves are built in the Renaissance style and date from the 16th century. The main altarpiece was erected in 1516 and 1517; it combines themes from the life of the saint with depictions of Christ.

The Camino Real de Guadalupe is also part of the townscape as a historic route: it passes through Camarena and was part of the pilgrimage route to the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe. For two centuries, this pilgrimage route was considered the most popular. Camarena's patron-saint festivals honor the Virgen de la Caridad. Another tradition that continues to this day is celebrating Saint Mark's Day with picnics beneath the few remaining poplar trees in Boadilla; this gathering is known as „la junta“.

Nature

The Parque de la Fuente Santa was created and built at the place where, according to local tradition, a Marian miracle is said to have occurred, as reported in a manuscript from 1237. The park has a playground, benches and walking areas.

The Parque del Prado Palacios is a 30-hectare natural area. It was reforested with pine trees and native holm oaks. The two sites therefore provide different settings between landscaped areas for visitors and a larger reforested natural area.

Wine and Regional Character

In Camarena, wineries preserve the wine tradition by explaining the history of their wines. In the broader regional context, Camarena is one of the places in the D.O. Méntrida area associated with wine and history.
