Almendral de la Cañada – Mountains, Gorges and Hiking Trails

Almendral de la Cañada is situated at an elevated location within the Sierra de San Vicente and has a rugged landscape of mountains, slopes and gorges. The Sierra de San Vicente completely surrounds the town; the surrounding area features natural viewpoints with sweeping views of the sierra and the nearby valleys.

Landscape and Trails

The natural surroundings of Almendral de la Cañada are a good example of Mediterranean woodland. Notable species include holm oak, oak, olive, mulberry and ash trees; native species such as cork oak and Pyrenean oak are also found here.

Traditional paths and hiking trails lead from Almendral de la Cañada through the mountains and connect the town with other mountain villages. The PR-TO 46 begins at the town hall square, heads south towards the Cañada Real and runs along the northern slope of the Sierra de San Vicente through dehesas, oak forests and pine forests.

The Mirador de Almendral de la Cañada is located along the PR-TO 46. From there, panoramic views extend over the town, the Tiétar Valley and the southeastern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos.

The SL-TO 04 is a 6.9-kilometre circular hiking trail with a low level of difficulty, promoted by the municipality of Almendral de la Cañada. South of Almendral de la Cañada, this hiking trail connects with the PR-TO 46 and follows the Cañada Real Leonesa together with it. Culture and History

Blessed Ana de San Bartolomé was born in Almendral de la Cañada in 1549 and was secretary to Teresa of Jesus. Another notable feature in the town is El Caño, a livestock watering trough with two outlets made from a single-piece granite basin. The engraved dates 1775 and 1886 mark its reconstructions.
