The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Catalina gives El Real de San Vicente a striking historical introduction: the church was built between the 17th and 18th centuries in the Renaissance and Baroque styles.

Culture and History

The church is protected as a Monumento de Interés Cultural, or Bien de Interés Cultural. Its notable artworks include four polychrome wooden sculptures from the 18th century, including the Virgen de los Dolores. The works were created by Luís Salvador Carmona.

Another historical trace leads to the Real Convento del Piélago. The Order of Discalced Carmelites founded the monastery in 1687; two years later, through the favour of Carlos II, it came under royal patronage. The new temple replaced the former chapel and was inaugurated in 1741. Only the church walls and part of the cloister remain of the monastery.

The Pozo de Nieve de El Piélago lies in the Sierra at the beginning of the Camino de los Repetidores and is one of three snow wells associated with the nearby monastery. In the snow well, snow was stored in alternating layers with compacted straw so that it could be sold to nearby places for preserving food. The snow was transported by mule or horse to places such as Talavera.

At the exit of El Real de San Vicente stands the Fuente de los Veneruelos, a Baroque stone fountain from the 18th century. Three spouts supply clear water from the Sierra. The Ermita de San Nicasio is a small 20th-century stone chapel with a gabled roof, located in a park of the same name.

Within the town, the Fuente de los Caños and a traditional washhouse form a historic ensemble. Living traditions include Los Carnavales: the centuries-old Carnaval-de-Ánimas tradition is maintained by a uniformed Soldadesca. From Epiphany to Carnival, it makes its way through the streets every weekend, accompanied by drums, flag-waving and traditional games such as Cucaña and Tiznao.

Nature and Trails

The landscape of El Real de San Vicente is characterised by granite rocks in various shapes. These include Berrocal rock formations and so-called piedras caballeras. Chestnut and oak forests, as well as Mediterranean woodland and scrubland, make up most of the natural vegetation.

The PR-TO 21 route begins with a long ascent of 600 metres in elevation and connects the town with the summit of Monte Pelados. The stated elevation difference immediately distinguishes this route in terms of scale from the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental.

This historic livestock trail runs along the northern edge of the municipality of El Real de San Vicente for more than 5 km.
