Discover Lagartera: Textile Art, Festivals and El Calvario
Lagartera is known for its rich tradition of handmade embroidery; as early as the 17th century, women made these items for household linen and traditional clothing. The textile work of Lagartera has been documented since the 16th century. Known as “Labores de Lagartera” – comprising traditional clothing and other textile products – it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of intangible cultural heritage. To this day, traditional textile art is displayed at certain family, religious or institutional celebrations.
Culture
During Lagartera’s Corpus Christi celebration, the monstrance is carried through the town between decorated balconies and areas adorned with centuries-old textiles. At this celebration, residents wear traditional clothing from Lagartera. Lagartera’s Corpus Christi is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest.
The Museo Municipal Marcial Moreno Pascual is located in a farmhouse dating from the early 20th century, whose original structure has been preserved except for the upper floor. The ground floor of the museum houses a collection of ceramics and copperware dating from the 16th to the 20th century. The first upper floor permanently displays the costumbrist work of Marcial Moreno Pascual.
The Ermita de los Santos Mártires has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave layout and an octagonal apse. The festival of the Santos Mártires is celebrated at the ermita on 20 January.
Nature
El Calvario is a natural area south of the municipality of Lagartera. The Stations of the Cross at El Calvario begin on the outskirts of the town and lead via fourteen stone stations in an uphill, winding sequence to the top of the hill. During Lent, women from Lagartera traditionally climb to Calvario every day at different times to meditate and pray there while “hacer las cruces”.
The formats mentioned can be weighed against one another according to the occasion and personal focus: the exhibition, festival, processional route and historic building can be explored without a set order. The different themes thus offer different ways of approaching the place: a visit can focus on textile traditions and museum collections, centre on religious feast days and devotion, or place historic buildings and their chronological context at the forefront.
History
In the 16th century, the Puente Grande replaced an earlier bridge with a larger structure. An inscription on the Puente Grande de Toledillo gives 1578 as the year of its construction.
