Madridejos: Saffron, Culture and Holiday Apartment

The Museo del Azafrán y Etnográfico is housed in the former San Francisco Franciscan monastery in Madridejos. It presents the entire saffron production process: from preparing the soil and planting the bulbs to harvesting and processing the flowers, as well as preparing and selling the saffron. The ethnographic section also features traditional home slaughtering, a school from the mid-20th century, pottery, embroidery and an 18th-century bedchamber.

History and Culture

The silos of Madridejos form a distinctive architectural feature. These are underground homes dug into the earth by hand, which were used from the 19th century until the second half of the 20th century. The silos are regarded as typical architectural testimonies of La Mancha and as characteristic of Madridejos. The Silo del Tío Colorao is one of two restored silo museums in Madridejos; it recreates the lives of the families who once lived in these spaces.

The Molino del Tío Genaro preserves its original structure and original machinery and is designated as a “Bien de Interés Cultural”. For groups, the mill offers theatrical guided tours on all days of the week by prior reservation. Another historic stop is the Iglesia de El Divino Salvador, built from 1531 to around 1571 in the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Inside is a granite baptismal font dating from 1688, decorated with three crosses of the Order of St. John. The sacristy houses a museum with various objects related to the Eucharistic rite.

The present-day Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Prado dates from 1660. Inside are dome paintings and an 18th-century Churrigueresque grille. Churches, monasteries, mills and silos each highlight different historical aspects, allowing architectural history, religious art and former ways of everyday life to be considered separately.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta del bandolero Castrola leads from the Ermita Virgen de Valdehierro to the cave of the bandit Castrola. The Senda del Lince is located near Madridejos in the Sierra de Valdehierro, a low mountain range with pine forests, holm oaks and scrubland. The Cueva de Castrola contains an ecosystem unique in the region, with an Atlantic microclimate and fern vegetation.

The municipality of Madridejos includes Natura 2000 sites. These include the Sierra de Valdehierro in the Montes de Toledo area, designated as a ZEPA and LIC, as well as the northern ZEPA “Área Esteparia de la Mancha Norte”. The routes in Madridejos are signposted and recommended for hiking and cycling year-round; the ascent to the Cueva Castrola by bicycle is an exception. The different landscapes, trail destinations and modes of transport therefore offer various focuses for planning a day trip.

Festivals and Regional Products

The Jornadas Quijotescas have taken place in Madridejos since 2005 during the last week of June. The programme includes theatre performances, music, regional dances, crafts, gastronomy and folklore, as well as a Cervantes market with tastings of local dishes. San Sebastián is celebrated on 20 January as the patronal festival of Madridejos. The traditional celebration has existed since 1817 and includes a procession, fire bulls, a pole-climbing competition and a bonfire.

Entre Olivos & Azafrán is a new tourist route in Madridejos that connects gastronomy, culture and the town’s monumental heritage. The products initially participating in the route include olive oil, saffron, cheese, almonds and wine.
