Castillo de Bayuela: Cerro del Castillo, History and Sierra de San Vicente

Cerro del Castillo preserves the remains of an originally Vettonic wall that was renewed in the Middle Ages. Rock altars from the Bronze Age have also been preserved on the esplanade of Cerro del Castillo.

History and Culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Andrés Apóstol is a Gothic-Renaissance church. After a fire in 1924, it was rebuilt; in 1934, the ceramic artist Juan Ruiz de Luna created a retable and a pulpit made of Talavera ceramics there.

The Verracos de Castillo de Bayuela are three zoomorphic sculptures from the pre-Roman Vettonic culture: the bull, the verraco and the sow; they are more than 2,000 years old. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Castillo was built on the remains of a former Muslim watchtower. The Rollo on the Plaza Mayor is a Late Gothic monument bearing the Mendoza coat of arms; it dates from the 16th century and was restored in the 19th century.

Festivals

At the Fiesta del Chorizo Gordo on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, the residents of Castillo de Bayuela roast chorizos outdoors; a charity sporting event also takes place.
