Santo Domingo-Caudilla – Holiday Apartment Among Churches and Festival Traditions

In Santo Domingo-Caudilla, sacred architecture and festive traditions exist side by side. The Iglesia parroquial de Santo Domingo de Silos displays Gothic-Baroque styling; its construction spans from the 16th century to the beginning of the 18th century. Culture and Architecture

The five-aisled nave of the Iglesia de Santo Domingo de Silos has a flattened barrel vault with lunettes. The square presbytery contains a ribbed cross vault; the curved apse is covered by a large altarpiece. The town’s traditional architectural heritage also includes arcades supported by stone columns.

The Ermita de Santa Ana is a religious building from the 13th century which, according to tradition, was built over the remains of an old Templar fortress. Its design follows a Latin cross plan with a four-bay nave and a choir gallery at the rear. The Ermita features a barrel vault and, at the junction between the building sections, a pendentive dome; it is crowned by a cimborrio.

Nearby, the Castillo de Caudilla is classified as a Bien de interés cultural. It is regarded as a representative non-military castle from the late feudal period.

Festivals and Traditions

The Fiestas Patronales de Santiago y Santa Ana take place on 25 and 26 July. The programme includes a solemn Mass, processions and floats, as well as sporting, musical and cultural activities.

Nine days before the feast of Saint Anne, from 17 July onward, the image is carried from the parish church to the Ermita de Santa Ana. There, residents of Santo Domingo guard the image day and night until 23 July.

The Santa Ana tradition includes a triumphal arch decorated with vine leaves and embroidered blankets, streets covered with rosemary and thyme, and performances of the Jota de Santa Ana through song and dance. Its lyrics are rewritten every year.

The Semana Cultural takes place in July during the week before the July festivals and includes cultural and sporting events as well as competitions. The celebration in honour of Santo Domingo de Silos takes place on the Sunday closest to 20 December; it includes a Mass and a procession.

During the 2024 patron-saint celebrations, a commemorative Mass for Santa Ana and San Joaquín was held in the Iglesia parroquial de Santo Domingo de Silos.

Día de la Pradera takes place on the hill of the Ermita de Santa Ana. It includes a Castilian Mass with Jotas and Rondallas, a Caldereta stew provided by the town council, traditional folk games, and performances of the traditional Seguidilla through song and dance.

Landscape and Trails

The hilltop of the Ermita de Santa Ana stands at an elevation of 575 metres and offers a viewpoint over the valley.

Local and neighbouring paths connect Santo Domingo-Caudilla with the Cañada Real Segoviana, whose route is shared there with sections in other municipalities.

Santo Domingo-Caudilla lies near the Camino Natural del Tajo, which offers hiking and cycling routes through the area’s characteristic agricultural landscape.
