Nature and Trails along the Tajo

El Carpio de Tajo lies within the Natura 2000 protected area ZEC-ZEPA Ríos de la margen izquierda del Tajo y berrocales del Tajo, code ES4250013. The Tajo shapes the surroundings of El Carpio de Tajo with riverside paths, natural areas and river landscapes that are suitable for walking and spending time in nature. One route leads from the centre of El Carpio de Tajo to the Casa del Barquero. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle and is suitable for all ages and levels of physical fitness.

History and Architectural Heritage

At Caserío Ronda on the Tajo stands the Ermita de Ronda, the former parish church of the Ronda settlement. It houses the image of Ntra. Sra. de Ronda, which is held in great veneration by the local population and is associated with a pilgrimage of particular ethnographic interest.

The tower of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel Arcángel consists of three sections. The sides of the upper sections are decorated with blind horseshoe arches. El Payón was first a Roman and later a Visigothic settlement; millstones, columns, amulets and pieces of jewellery were found there. Valle del Puchío is a Visigothic necropolis with 200 graves and associated artefacts.

Castillo de El Carpio is a medieval fortress that shapes the landscape and recalls the strategic role of the town in controlling the crossing of the Tajo. Puente de El Carpio is a historic bridge that has connected the two banks of the Tajo for centuries. Together with the fortress and the remains of earlier settlements, it points to the town's long history, although the individual remains do not all date from the same period.

Festivals and Cultural Gatherings

The horse-racing tradition of the fiestas in honour of Santiago Apóstol dates back to a vow made by the inhabitants in 1584; its historical continuity has been documented for more than four centuries. Among the most defining events are processions and races featuring horses decorated with colourful ribbons and led by traditional riders. The Carreras de Caballos Enjaezados of El Carpio de Tajo hold the title Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional of Castilla-La Mancha and take place there every year.

Folklore festivals have been held in El Carpio de Tajo every July since 1995. Other comparable groups are also invited to exchange cultural experiences. Casa del Barquero is a small museum with old photographs and other materials illustrating the development of this river landscape. Its surroundings offer leisure, recreation and sports activities, as well as cultural activities such as the Encuentros de Artistas Locales.

Gastrofolk is a multi-part event in El Carpio de Tajo that brings together folk culture, gastronomy, crafts and nature.
