Gamonal: La Soldadesca, Festivals and Historic Sites

Gamonal is closely associated with La Soldadesca, which is protected as an intangible Asset of Cultural Interest. It plays a particularly important role during Carnival in Gamonal and the Mondas Festival in Talavera de la Reina.

Culture

Plaza de las Cruces is the central venue for La Soldadesca celebrations and is also covered by this protection. Las Candelas is celebrated on 2 February in honour of Gamonal’s patron saint, the Virgen de la Purificación, and begins with a procession of the patron saint through the streets of Gamonal.

La Función de la Iglesia takes place on 27 February and commemorates the collapse of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Purificación in 1900; it includes an annual procession of the Virgen de la Purificación through Gamonal.

In the Mondas procession in Talavera de la Reina, Gamonal takes part with a decorated float adorned with aromatic herbs and flags and pulled by two rams.

History

The Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de la Purificación, also known as Nuestra Señora de la Purificación, is a church built around 1580 in the Gothic-Renaissance style. It originated from a hermitage that may have been built in 1512.

Las Pilas is a traditional 19th-century washing place. The landmark known as Las Tres Cruces is located at the entrance to Gamonal.

La Encarnación is the site of the former settlement of “La Zarzuela de Arriba”; the remains of a hermitage dedicated to the Virgin of Encarnación survive there in a state of ruin. Cruz del Niño is a large stone with a cross in the Alcor and Berrocal area; local tradition associates it with a child killed by wolves.

Activities

The “Paseos saludables” activity takes place on Fridays from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., starts at the local medical centre and is open to anyone interested after registering there.

The 2026 municipal swimming-pool season in Gamonal opened on 20 June 2026.

During the second test of the Senda Viriato, the circular route ran from Plaza de la Constitución via Plaza de las Tres Cruces and Parque de las Pilas; it then continued uphill to the La Cruz del Niño area and the reservoir before the return route began.

Getting There

From Talavera de la Reina, the journey can be made via the A-5 to exit 128 and then along the Ctra. Alberche to C. Botica; it takes approximately 15 minutes.
