Montesclaros between marble quarries and Sierra landscapes

Montesclaros showcases part of its history at the white dolomitic marble quarries: in 1780 and 1781, blocks were extracted there for the La Cibeles and Neptuno fountains in Madrid, respectively.

Culture and history

Its architectural heritage includes the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, which dates from 1552. Its tower was built towards the end of the 15th century in the Gothic style from ashlar masonry. The Rollo de Justicia was also created in the 15th century in the Late Gothic style. The Pozo romano is a well built in a typically Roman style from granite blocks; its origin and date are uncertain. One structure has an approximately square floor plan, roughly worked ashlar walls and a stone portal with a semicircular arch. The settlement may have developed through the use of the local lime kilns, known as caleras.

Landscape and trails

The PR-TO 26 Ruta de los Caleros is a 7.96 km circular trail with a low level of difficulty. The Ruta de Los Caleros passes through former limestone extraction and processing sites, leading to lime kilns and dolomite quarries. It runs through a wooded dehesa and pine landscape east of the Sierra de San Vicente. The white dolomitic marble quarries were used mainly for the lime industry. The Ruta de los Molinos de Montesclaros leads to old watermills and through scenic natural areas. Montesclaros's location in the Sierra de San Vicente offers opportunities for hiking. The circular trail, historic work sites, mills and natural areas provide different focal points for planning.

For planning a day, the trails clearly differ in character: the PR-TO 26 combines the specified circular route with former lime-extraction work sites, while the Ruta de los Molinos brings together old watermills and natural areas. This makes it possible to consider traces of historic crafts, dehesa and pine landscapes, and milling traditions as separate focal points.

Festivals and customs

The Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia is closely associated with local religious devotion and popular celebrations. To celebrate San Sebastián on 20 January, wine, chorizo and cheese are handed out to everyone interested in the evening at the Centro Social. Los Huevos is a traditional festival held on Easter Sunday, during which the Quintos hang empty eggshells on braided loaves of bread. The El Leño custom on 4 February involves the Quintos lighting a log in the square in the evening; a snack is also served there. Santa Águeda and El Leño are celebrated on 5 February. Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is celebrated on 15 August.
