El Toboso: Cervantes, Wine and Well Routes

El Toboso combines a centuries-old wine-growing tradition with a literary connection: in Chapter IX of the second part of El Quijote, Cervantes describes the Iglesia de San Antonio Abad. The town is part of the Ruta del Vino de La Mancha, and wine jars have been produced here since at least the 15th century. Culture and History

The Convento de la Purísima Concepción y San José, popularly known as the Convento de las Trinitarias de El Toboso, was founded in 1681 and completed in 1683. The Convento de las Trinitarias is designated as a Monument of Cultural Interest and was built in the 17th century.

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad is designated as a Monument of Cultural Interest and belongs to the late Gothic period. The first section of its square tower was built in 1552 in the Plateresque style.

Museums

The Museo Casa de Dulcinea preserves parts of the original structure of the 16th-century house known as Casa de la Torrecilla. Typical domestic areas and facilities include a kitchen, pantry, dovecote, courtyards, stables, an oil mill and a wine press. The museum has accessibility measures in place.

The Museo Trinitario houses paintings and religious sculptures from the 17th-century Spanish school, as well as goldsmiths’ work, ornaments and gold embroidery. The Museo de Humor Gráfico “Dulcinea” contains around 90 humorous illustrations featuring the character Dulcinea.

The Jornadas Cervantinas take place in April on the weekend closest to 23 April. They include a Cervantes market, street theatre, games and various stalls run by craftspeople.

Well Routes

The Ruta de los Pozos leads to water wells within El Toboso and in the surrounding areas of the town; many of them have intricately carved stone well surrounds. The route includes 16th-century watering troughs and the Pozo del Calvario, whose origin is traditionally attributed to the Celtiberians.

The Pozo de la Gascona has a well surround made from a single block of limestone, with four irregular, asymmetrically arranged, approximately circular openings.

Wine and Local Production

By prior reservation, Bodega Los Gredales offers guided tours of the winery and vineyards, including wine tastings. At Bodega Ibicea, the winery and vineyard tour includes wine tasting and typical regional tapas.
