Culture and History

The Ermita del Cristo de la Vera Cruz is a Mudéjar building from the middle of the 16th century. Its façade was built entirely from dressed stone; the brick-built bell gable has the shape of an espadaña. Inside, the elongated nave leads through a semicircular triumphal arch to the main chapel.

San Pedro de la Mata is a Visigothic temple from the 7th century and is considered one of the most important Visigothic temples on the Iberian Peninsula. The remains can be visited freely, provided that the historic site is respected.

The Ermita de San Gregorio Nacianceno is associated with a pilgrimage in May. Semana Santa is an annual celebration in Sonseca that includes processions on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Trails and Landscape

The “Ruta del Pasado Visigodo” hiking trail is 17 kilometres long and runs through the municipality of Sonseca. Its central section approaches the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and runs along the slopes of the Sierra. These slopes are an impressive example of dense, species-rich Mediterranean woodland.

The walking route from Sonseca to Castillo de Torre Tolanca leads via the Camino de la Estrella. The Camino de Santiago Manchego is a 135-kilometre pilgrimage route connecting Ciudad Real and Toledo. The different route lengths can be compared as two clearly distinct planning frameworks. The route within the municipality therefore contrasts with a long-distance connection between Ciudad Real and Toledo.

Cuisine and Festivals

Mazapán is considered a local speciality in Sonseca and is consumed year-round, including at Easter as “Huesos de Santo”, at Christmas in the form of figurines and as “Sopa Almendra”. The latter is a cold dessert made from milk, marzipan paste and bread. These varieties combine seasonal occasions with a speciality consumed throughout the year.

Sonseca’s traditional cuisine includes small-game dishes such as potatoes with rabbit, stewed or marinated partridge, rice with hare and seasoned hare. Other dishes include fried meat, pisto, gazpacho manchego, puches, gachas de pastor and migas pastoriles.
