Torrico between Romanesque Church and the Tagus

The parish church of San Gil Abad gives Torrico a particularly vivid historical character: its construction began in the 12th century in the late Romanesque style. From this Romanesque building phase, the church preserves the tower, apse and baptismal font. A later Mudéjar extension added a coffered ceiling, the presbytery and a gallery.

Culture

Outside Torrico stands the Ermita de Santa Ana, built over an earlier chapel. At the Plaza de España, the Rollo de Justicia, a Baroque monument from the 17th century, commemorates another distinctive landmark in the townscape.

Historic water facilities are also among the visible features. The Abrevadero de Tarrarra has an L-shaped layout and follows the course of a spring, giving livestock easy access to the water. It is also considered the oldest structure in the town and was built by the Vettones. The Abrevadero El Pilón is a Roman water facility: the outlet first flows into a round basin and then into a rectangular one.

The Aceñas del Conde lie on the Tagus downstream from Puente del Arzobispo, within the municipality of Torrico. A visible channel and a sluice that regulated the water flow have been preserved there. The old mill area retains vertical wheels; the plural name is based on the existence of two such wheels.

Local culture also includes the Corpus Christi processions, during which the streets are decorated with typical embroidery from the town and with altars. The Ermita de Santa Ana contains a statue of the saint from the 14th century, considered the oldest of the surviving statues.

Nature

The rural landscape around Torrico is characterized by scrubland, holm oaks and cork oaks. The surrounding area is suitable for gentle outdoor activities, including walks through agricultural fields, routes through scrubland and visits to the banks of the Tagus. From Torrico, routes through the heritage of the Campana de Oropesa can be combined.

Long walks are possible at Lago de Tarrarra. The lake is also ideal for sunset photography, when the last rays of sunlight are reflected on the water. Different settings and ways of exploring therefore offer distinct focal points between local history, landscape and peaceful paths.

At the Torrico Carnival, a special run by the Sargentos, carried out by the Ánimas unit, is a central feature of the programme. After the run, the Sargentos carry the typical sweets Floretas, Suspiros and Roscas in earthenware vessels to the square. They are sold there to collect donations for masses held throughout the year for the poor souls in Purgatory.
