Discover Yepes: Culture and Nature Around the City Walls

Yepes preserves a medieval walled complex with two medieval defensive towers and four historic gates from its former city walls.

Culture

The Puerta de Madrid, also known as the Puerta de San Miguel, belongs to the second ring of Yepes’s walls. Two semicircular towers flank it; on the side facing the town is a painting depicting the archangel Saint Michael. The Puerta de Toledo, also known as the Puerta del Carmen, also belongs to the second ring of walls. It is flanked by two semicircular towers with loopholes and machicolations. At the top, on a Baroque altarpiece, it bears an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel facing the town centre.

The Convento de San José y San Ildefonso is a convent of the Discalced Carmelite nuns with a single-nave church, a barrel vault, and a Baroque altarpiece. The Picota, or Rollo Jurisdiccional, is a Gothic symbol of jurisdiction with a base of four steps and carved little columns decorated with half-pearl motifs.

The Ermita de San Sebastián is a Baroque church from the 17th century with three naves, separated by five stone Doric columns. The Ermita de San José is a Baroque chapel from the 17th century with two levels: the ground floor consists of ashlar stonework, while the upper floor is made of masonry.

The Iglesia Hospital de la Concepción forms part of a former hospital complex and has a single-nave interior with a barrel vault, five transverse arches, and a raised gallery. Inside the church, a 17th-century grille separates the main chapel from the nave. The Casa Don Pedro Flores de la Oliva is a Herrerian townhouse next to Yepes’s Plaza Mayor, built around a square courtyard with a colonnade. The main altarpiece of the Iglesia Colegiata de San Benito Abad in Yepes consists of fourteen paintings by Luis Tristán depicting episodes from the life of Christ.

Tours and Nature

Guided tours of the old town can be booked through the Yepes tourist information office, offering an opportunity to learn more about its history and monuments. The “Las Fuentes del Valle” hiking route is included in the province of Toledo’s Paseos Naturales programme. The two formats focus on different aspects: historical exploration or hiking.

Events

Since 2000, the Yepes municipal council has organised the Jornadas Calderonianas, cultural and religious events, during the week surrounding the Feast of Corpus Christi. They include a Corpus Christi procession and dramatised tours entitled “A Journey Through 17th-Century Yepes”. As part of the Jornadas Calderonianas, a Baroque market takes place in the Plaza Mayor, where local artisans and producers offer traditional food and handcrafted products.
