Esquivias between Cervantes Sites and Hiking Trails

Esquivias can be explored through specific Cervantes sites, historic buildings and distinctive trails. The Casa-Museo Miguel de Cervantes displays several editions of El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha in various languages, including an English edition from the 17th century.

Culture

The Casa-Museo Miguel de Cervantes also displays copies of documents from the 16th century taken from the parish registers. They prove the existence of some people connected with figures from El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha who lived in Esquivias at that time. The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands on the site of the former church of Santa María de la Asunción, where Miguel de Cervantes and Catalina were married. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción was built from 1785 to 1794 and preserves a Gothic-Mudéjar tower and a baptismal font from 1686 from the former church.

The Casa de Catalina de Palacios is a two-storey manor house. Catalina de Palacios, Cervantes' future wife, lived there with her parents and siblings from her birth until she was 19. The Convento de Capuchinos was built between 1719 and 1725; its exterior façade is characterised by masonry and brick bands in the Toledo style.

Los Cerros de Esquivias is a moderately difficult hiking route covering 8.49 km, with a stated duration of 2 hours and 41 minutes. The route passes through part of the pine forest. From Cerro de Santa Bárbara, it offers panoramic views of Esquivias and the entire La Sagra comarca.

The Parajes Cervantinos route passes through olive groves along the Vereda de Santa Juana. It then continues to Cerro de la Cruz and the Ermita de Santa Bárbara. Cerro de Santa Bárbara lies in the central part of the Esquivias area and is a geodetic point at an elevation of 687 m.

Festivals and Traditions

Santa Juana is a deeply rooted traditional festival in Esquivias and is also known locally as Tortilla Day; people prepare tortilla and eat it outdoors. The Jornadas Cervantinas de Esquivias are recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional and have been held continuously since 1979 to commemorate the wedding of Miguel de Cervantes and Catalina de Salazar y Palacios, which took place in Esquivias on 12 December 1584.

The programme of the Jornadas Cervantinas de Esquivias includes theatre performances, guided tours, a historical market, processions and family activities. The Santa Bárbara celebration includes a Romería to the Ermita de Santa Bárbara on the hill of the same name, where Mass is celebrated. The mercado cervantino offers handicrafts, traditional sweets and demonstrations of old crafts.
