Villacañas: Museums, Lagoons and Trails

Villacañas brings traditional ways of life and a lagoon landscape to life: The Museo Municipal Etnográfico de Villacañas presents traditional life in a permanent exhibition, including the former occupations, everyday objects and tools, living spaces and other aspects of daily life of the people who lived in this area over the course of time. A large flamingo colony lives in the Laguna Larga de Villacañas, an 84-hectare, endorheic lagoon shaped by human activity.

Culture

The Ermita de San Roque was built around 1835 in the style of vernacular architecture and has a single rectangular nave.

The Casa-Museo de la Tía Sandalia preserves a collection of 66 freestanding sculptures, 40 bas-reliefs, 26 canvases and frescoes. It also displays religious art by a self-taught artist who created biblical scenes in her own home using plaster, lime, tempera paints, cardboard, fabrics, wire, branches, vine wood, household tools and even her own hair.

The Museo Municipal del Silo de Villacañas is housed in one of the town’s characteristic excavated silos; these silos are examples of La Mancha’s vernacular architecture. The museum reconstructs scenes from traditional daily life, complemented by agricultural tools, household objects, furniture, and items related to farming, food production and local customs.

Details of military-influenced architecture and the Cross of Saint John can be found in Villacañas, among other places, at the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de la Viga, the Casa de la Tercia and the monumental Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The Danzantes y Santísimo Cristo de la Viga celebration features dances with sticks, castanets and ribbons.

Nature and Trails

La Larga, the Laguna de Peña Hueca, the Laguna de Tirez, La Redondilla and La Gramosa are located near Villacañas and form part of the La Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve. The Laguna de Tirez covers 89 hectares, is endorheic and hypersaline; in summer, it can dry out completely.

The first stage of the Camino Natural de los Humedales de La Mancha runs between Villacañas and Quero. A branch less than one kilometre long leads from the main route to the Laguna Larga de Villacañas and the Observatorio del Flamenco.

The 24.98-kilometre developed Vía Verde del Trenillo also passes through Villacañas. The route is suitable for hikers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. The different route lengths provide a clear framework when weighing up time spent in nature and culture for a single day.
