Toledo is a historic city situated on a steep rock above the Tagus and preserves a distinctive historic cityscape. Twenty centuries of history, an area of around 260 hectares and a significant historical heritage give the city an exceptionally rich cultural setting.

Culture and History

Synagogues, mosques and churches representing different artistic styles stand side by side in the narrow streets. The Museo Sefardí preserves and conveys the heritage of Hispano-Jewish and Sephardic culture as an essential part of Toledo’s cultural heritage. Its emblematic building is the Samuel ha-Leví Synagogue, commonly known as the El Tránsito Synagogue, which was built in the Jewish quarter of Toledo in the mid-14th century and is considered Spain’s most significant Hispano-Jewish building.

The Museo del Greco is also located in the Jewish quarter. It occupies several buildings that recreate the atmosphere of a 16th-century house in Toledo. Its permanent exhibition includes some of El Greco’s most representative paintings, as well as works by other contemporary artists.

Santa María la Blanca was Toledo’s main synagogue until 1411, after which it was converted into a Christian temple. The building is regarded as an outstanding example of Mudéjar art in Toledo and has five naves as well as horseshoe and multilobed arches. Santa María la Blanca can be visited individually; individual tickets are available for this purpose.

The Corpus Christi procession is one of the religious traditions preserved in the historic city. Toledo is also one of the places in Castilla-La Mancha associated with the Carmelite foundations and the reform work of Teresa of Ávila; the city is therefore part of the Ruta de Santa Teresa de Jesús.

Cityscape and Viewpoints

The Alcázar of Toledo is located on the city’s highest hill, at a strategic site that has been used since Roman times. A tour of the Alcázar allows the public to visit its preserved, distinctive interior spaces.

The tower of Toledo Cathedral is open to visitors and offers panoramic views over the city.

Opposite the historic centre, on the slope of the Valle on the other side of the Tagus, lies the Mirador del Valle. From there, visitors have direct views of the walled city and its monumental silhouette. The Puente de San Martín in western Toledo was already in existence by the mid-14th century; it has five pointed arches and two hexagonal towers.

Historic buildings, museums and views of the walled city offer different focal points. When planning your visit, you can compare them with one another, as well as with culture, panoramic views and outdoor activities.

Routes and Sightseeing

The Rutas de Patrimonio Desconocido offer free guided visits to various monuments, archaeological sites and other restored attractions in Toledo. An ecological trail runs parallel to the banks of the Tagus and around Toledo’s historic centre.

Along the city walls, this trail runs from the escalators towards the Puerta del Cambrón and turns towards the Tagus before the Puente de San Martín. The route thus connects the circuit of the walls, the riverbank and one of the historic buildings in the west of the city in one continuous section.
