Navahermosa – Nature, Culture and Hiking Routes

In Navahermosa, the mountain ridges crowned with quartzite cliffs south of the town meet striking, characteristic scree slopes. Nature and landscape

El Cabezo has a viewpoint with wide-ranging panoramic views of the foothills of the Montes de Toledo and the Tajo valley. A publicly accessible mountain in the municipality of Navahermosa preserves a forest of Pyrenean oaks, also known as Melojo or Rebollo oaks. The highest peak in the municipality is 1,401 m high and, in clear weather, offers views across the province of Toledo.

Routes and recreation

La Milagra serves as a starting point for many local routes and is a nature recreation area with extensive open spaces and facilities for use by local residents and visitors. The Ruta de la Hoz de Carboneros begins at the coto social of Navahermosa; it is listed as 14 km long, with a walking time of 4 hours. The Carboneras waterfall on this route drops in a curtain from a height of 10–15 m.

Culture and history

Construction of the present-day Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel began around 1563 according to plans by the architect Hernán González. The church has five domes, including an oval dome over the crossing, as well as a Baroque organ dating from 1775. The Ermita de San Sebastián is located at the entrance to Navahermosa on the old Camino de Toledo; it was first documented in 1576 and rebuilt in its present form in 1671. One building features a simple roof structure with a coffered ceiling made of rafters and collar beams, as well as 14 traditional pegs.

The Romería de la Milagra received the designation of a regionally significant tourism festival (Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional) on 18 May 2016. It features decorated floats and riders on horseback accompanying the Virgin to the hermitage in the valley of Valtravieso, surrounded by nature and mountains. During Corpus Christi, the streets are decorated with altars and thyme carpets for the passage of the procession with a 17th-century monstrance. The Fiestas de San Bartolomé are celebrated on 24 August.

Local cuisine

Traditional Navahermosa cuisine includes dishes made with game, partridge, quail and rabbit. The Cornicabra olive variety grown in Navahermosa is used to produce olive oil associated with the protected designation of origin Montes de Toledo.
