Discover Gerindote: Church, Festivals and Rural Paths

Gerindote combines rural paths with a varied local history and vibrant traditional festivals. Between historic buildings, fountains and traditional celebrations, the character of a place emerges whose special features can be explored both on a walk and by looking at the annual calendar.

Culture and History

A prominent cultural landmark is the Iglesia Parroquial de San Mateo Apóstol. The parish church dates from the 16th century and is stylistically classified as vernacular Baroque. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and the building also has three naves. The church preserves a devotional ceramic panel from Talavera, probably dating from the 18th century.

The historic water sources also tell of living conditions in the past. The historic Caño in Gerindote was built because of water shortages and later served as a place where women washed wool and clothing. Caño Viejo is a vernacular stone fountain from the 18th century on Avenida de la Constitución. At Calle Hurtada 3, there is a vernacular-style mill from the early 20th century, preserved with all of its machinery.

Paths and Landscape

The Cañada Real area in Gerindote is open to the public and equipped with picnic areas, a park area and toilets. A route along the Cañada Real Segoviana also passes through the municipality. Gerindote’s rural paths and agricultural surroundings make peaceful walks possible.

For planning your own day, the different paths and local points of interest can easily be distinguished: the Cañada connects the landscape with public recreation areas, while the fountains, mill and church serve as individual cultural and historical points of interest. Festivals and Traditional Customs

The Fiestas de San José are celebrated on 18 and 19 March. The festivities include a procession, fireworks, as well as musical, sporting and cultural performances. The following day there is a mass and a procession during which bids are made for carrying the bearers of the saint’s statue.

Holy Week also preserves a tradition of its own: Juego de la Calva is played every Holy Week on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in the Plaza de Gerindote. Gerindote continues to maintain the old traditional custom of the Matanza del guarro. A ploughing competition also takes place in the Cañada.

Another religious tradition is San Antón. Animals are blessed during San Antón; bread rings are also currently blessed there. The Certamen Popular de Villancicos Populares brings together other municipalities in the comarca to perform and preserve Christmas carols passed down through generations. The various dates combine religious customs, music, games, processions and local traditions into a calendar of clearly distinguishable events.
