Noblejas – Roman Traces, Wine Culture and Local Traditions

Noblejas combines Roman heritage, wine-making tradition and a landscape along the Tagus with festivals and culinary specialities. Cueva Villacampa contains an old Roman mine for lapis specularis, or gypsum crystal; some veins are still visible inside.

The rural setting includes Finca de Torrique: a 251-hectare, 26-are and 56-centiare dehesa with walnut plantations and vineyards on the Tagus.

Culture and History

Cueva Villacampa is difficult to find without a guide, as no path leads to it. The Ermita de María Magdalena is an 18th-century Baroque chapel with the layout of a Latin cross.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol is a 17th-century church in the Herrerian and Neoclassical styles. It has six chapels forming two sections with three naves each; the central nave is wider than the side naves. Near Finca de Torrique, two Roman hydraulic structures with clearly Roman typology have been preserved: “Pontón Grande” and “Pontón Chico”.

Festivals and Wine

La Vieja is a tradition held annually in Noblejas on the Thursday in the middle of Lent, centred on sharing a meal. It includes picnics in the countryside with tortilla and breaded cutlets; hornazo is indispensable, a flatbread or cake-like bread with one or more boiled eggs in the middle.

The festival in honour of Santísimo Cristo de las Injurias begins on 30 April; the most important days are 3 and 4 May. The programme includes, among other events, a floral offering, regional dress on 2 May, and a procession with traditional “Vivas” when entering the Iglesia Santiago Apóstol on the 3rd.

The festivities in honour of Santa María Magdalena take place in Noblejas in July, around 22 July, over a weekend with numerous activities. Bodega Grande contains around one hundred wine jars from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the earthenware jar “La Bisiesta”, with a capacity of up to 8,064 litres of wine.

The Ruta del Vino de Noblejas connects local wineries with the characteristic vineyard landscape of the Mesa de Ocaña and offers insights into both. The combination of wine cellars, vineyards and rural landscape creates a distinct focus alongside the Roman and ecclesiastical buildings.
