Tembleque is home to the Plaza Mayor de Tembleque, one of the finest examples of 17th-century vernacular Baroque architecture in Spain. Two windmills stand on a small hill near the town centre of Tembleque.

Culture

The Palacio de las Torres is recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest; its façade bears the year of construction, 1753. The Casa de las Torres is an 18th-century palace with a Baroque portal. The Casa de Postas is reminiscent of a relay station where horses were kept for the postal service and other travellers.

The octagonal Ermita de la Vera Cruz now houses the municipal library. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in recognition of Tembleque’s contributions of soldiers and maravedís to the expedition to Oran in 1509. The Plaza de la Orden is connected to the Plaza Mayor and contains the former mill of the Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de Tembleque olive oil mill.

Different architectural forms, uses and references to different years give the town’s history several layers of meaning.

Festivals and Routes

The patron saint’s festival of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno takes place from 23 to 27 August and includes a solemn mass, a procession, fireworks, a dance event, sporting activities and cultural events. Tembleque is part of the Ruta del Quijote. Tembleque is also the endpoint of a stage of the Camino de Santiago de Levante (GR-239).

The stage from La Villa de Don Fadrique to Tembleque is 29.8 kilometres long. The Camino de Santiago de Levante route can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. For personal travel planning, route length and mode of transport can be considered as two separate points of comparison.

Pilgrimages and Surroundings

Tembleque is a stopping point for pilgrims on the Camino del Sureste. Two popular pilgrimages take place in the surroundings of Tembleque at the Ermita Santísimo Cristo del Valle: on the second Sunday in May and on the last Sunday in September. The Ermita Santísimo Cristo del Valle is located in the surroundings of Tembleque, approximately 15 kilometres from the town centre, at the Finisterre reservoir.
