Chueca: Culture, Festivals and Trails between the Plain and the Montes de Toledo

Chueca lies at the transition between the plain and the Montes de Toledo. The municipality is situated in a transitional landscape zone with a compact town centre and gentle elevations typical of the Montes de Toledo. The area around Chueca is characterised by low hills and cultivated fields. In this way, the plain, town centre and hilly landscape come together within a small area.

Chueca preserves a traditional town layout and a small-scale character that invites visitors to explore the town on foot. From Chueca, rural paths lead into the surrounding area of the Montes de Toledo, offering opportunities for walks and routes. The town centre and these paths therefore provide different ways of accessing the landscape: one remains within the established settlement, while the others lead into the nearby surroundings.

Culture

The parish church of Santa María Magdalena is one of Chueca’s religious monuments. Its nave is covered along its entire length by a Mudéjar coffered ceiling. The parish church was built between the 16th and 17th centuries. The Ermita de San Isidro is another religious site that forms part of the municipality’s character.

In addition to the Ermita de San Isidro, a Romería in honour of Saint Isidore takes place on 15 May. The church and the ermita thus reflect different facets of Chueca’s religious heritage.

Festivals and History

The statue of Santísimo Cristo del Olvido is made of corn paste. It dates from the 16th century and was created by Tarascans from Michoacán, Mexico. Chueca’s patron saint festivities in honour of Santísimo Cristo del Olvido take place on the third Sunday in September. The celebrations of Cristo del Olvido include a procession through the streets of Chueca.

To conclude the festivities in honour of Cristo del Olvido, a communal meal prepared by the residents and featuring a traditional stew was held in Chueca in 2025. Historically, Chueca was a village or small settlement inhabited by Mozarabs from Toledo during the harvest seasons. The 15th of May and the third Sunday in September therefore mark two different dates in the town’s annual calendar.

Landscape

Outside the municipality, the Ermita de San Roque stands at an elevated point and offers good views of Chueca and the natural surroundings. Together with the rural paths, low hills and cultivated fields, the landscape here can be seen from a variety of perspectives.
