Discover Dosbarrios: Monastery, Landscape and Festivals
On the Mesa de Ocaña, Dosbarrios presents itself as an open, flat agricultural landscape shaped by the cultivation of grain, grapes and olives. At the same time, the Trinitarian Monastery is protected as a monument as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).
Culture and History
The Monastery of the Discalced Trinitarians is said to have been founded on 6 April 1591 by Fray Domingo García. Around 1698, the Trinitarian convent—and possibly the church as well—had been completed; the final design of the cloister dates from the advanced 18th century.
In the 1690s, the Order of Santiago commissioned Churriguera, according to his designs, to create the main altar of the parish church of Dosbarrios. The altarpiece may not have been completed until around 1700, when the parish commissioned the sculpture.
Dosbarrios developed in the Middle Ages as a settlement connected to the Order of Santiago. The parish church of Santo Tomás Apóstol is one of Dosbarrios’s most important cultural heritage features.
The townscape also includes the Ermita de la Virgen del Rosario, a neoclassical chapel with a Greek-cross floor plan and a dome with a lantern, as well as the Ermita de San Antón. This chapel in the vernacular style has three naves separated by round arches.
Dosbarrios preserves a traditional town layout with quiet streets and vernacular Manchegan architecture.
