Discover Méntrida: Cave Culture, Nature and Tradition

In Méntrida, the Cuevas del Castillejo comprise a total of eleven underground caves. They have existed since at least the late 17th century and were used for winemaking until the 20th century.

Culture

The old town of Méntrida is designated as a historic site. The parish church of San Sebastián was built in the 16th century. The Camarín de la Virgen features painted decoration dating from 1699. The building has a Mudejar coffered ceiling from 1605, attributed to master carpenter Juan Domínguez.

The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of the Nativity takes place in Méntrida every year from 24 to 27 April. It includes, among other things, children dancing in traditional clothing, the Mayordomía and the Danza de los Arcos.

Experiences

The Museo de las Cuevas del Castillejo offers a guided tour of the outdoor area of the complex and the interiors of two municipal caves. The guided tour of the cave museum lasts one hour and 30 minutes. After the cave tour, a tasting is available as an additional activity.
