Culture and History

The historic centre of Orgaz is designated as a historic-artistic ensemble (Conjunto Histórico-Artístico). Characteristic Castilian arcades line the Plaza Mayor. The Castillo-Palacio de los Condes de Orgaz was built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. As a result, different historical periods and architectural forms stand side by side in the townscape.

A distinctive architectural detail is the Arco de Belén, with its semicircular entrance, a machicolation on one side and a crenellated parapet. The parish church Iglesia de Santo Tomás Apóstol was built in the mid-18th century. The Arco de Belén can thus be viewed through its defensive features, while the church represents a religious building from a later period. Together with the arcades of the Plaza Mayor and the Castillo-Palacio, they form several distinct architectural points of reference within the historic centre.

The Puente de los Cinco Ojos crosses the Riánsares stream and was restored in 2001. Another religious site is the Ermita del Socorro, dedicated to the Virgen de Socorro, the town’s patron saint. The bridge, chapel and religious connection broaden the view beyond the central architectural forms without assigning them to the same building purpose or period.

Traditions

The San Antón festival is celebrated on the eve of 17 January with fires in the neighbourhoods; traditional migas are sampled at these fires. On the feast day of San Antonio Abad, fodder and animals are blessed in front of the church. The festival of the Virgen de Socorro takes place every year on 8 September.

The two January references belong to different moments of the San Antón festival: on the eve, fires and migas shape the proceedings, while on the feast day the blessings take place in front of the church. The September date of the Virgen de Socorro stands separately in the annual calendar. In this way, the culinary custom, fire tradition and religious ceremony can each be perceived as distinct components of the local festivals.

National Road 402 runs near Orgaz and comes to within approximately 50 metres of the Castillo-Palacio de los Condes de Orgaz. The distance is given only approximately as about 50 metres.
