Landscape

Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Doubs can then continue their accommodation search. Doubs is described as an area with a wide variety of well-preserved landscapes. Two-thirds of the Doubs department are covered by the high plateaus of the Jura massif, and the department is crossed by the valleys of the Doubs and the Ognon.

The landscape includes remarkable protected animal and plant biodiversity as well as diverse habitats. On hikes, hikers may encounter chamois and lynxes; there is also a diverse birdlife, including capercaillies. The summit of Mont-d’Or reaches 1,463 metres and offers views towards the Alps and the Swiss mountains.

Nature

The Maison de la Réserve offers around 500 square metres of interactive exhibitions in six rooms about the protected area, the habitats of the Jura and the wildlife. Exhibitions and activities are also organised there, as well as nature outings. More than 5,000 species have been recorded in the Lac de Remoray nature reserve. On the Sentier de la Biodiversité, almost 20 species can be observed between May and October.

The Creux Billard is a karst spring of the Lison that formed after the collapse of the ceiling of an underground chamber.

Culture and history

The Saline Royale d’Arc-et-Senans was designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux and construction began in 1775. It is considered an important work of industrial architecture from the Age of Enlightenment. In 1982, the complex was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List; it was the first site of industrial origin to receive this UNESCO recognition.

The Fromagerie-musée de Trépot preserves equipment from traditional Comté production. Visits are complemented by a video and a Comté tasting. The Musée rural de Foucherans displays rural collections in a 17th-century farmhouse and offers guided tours on request, a shop and a picnic area.

The Maison du Patrimoine presents reconstructed 19th-century rooms, local traditions and regional dialects.

Trails and excursions

The GR® 59 crosses Doubs from the Doubs Valley towards the Jura massif and offers viewpoints from the ridges. The Sentier Pédestre de l’Absinthe connects Pontarlier and Noiraigue over 48 kilometres and reaches the 1,323-metre-high Grand Taureau on its French section.

The Sans dessus Dessoubre loop runs through the Parc naturel régional du Doubs Horloger, through forests, along rivers and past waterfalls. It follows lightly trafficked roads. The section of EuroVelo 6 in the Doubs Valley runs mostly along greenways and is accessible to everyone. The route can be started in Belfort, Montbéliard or Besançon.

Cuisine

The culinary traditions of Doubs include the cheeses Comté, Mont d’Or and cancoillotte. Mont d’Or AOP is sold exclusively from mid-September to mid-May and can be eaten cold or melted in the oven. The Distillerie Les Fils d’Emile Pernot in Pontarlier welcomes visitors and specialises in absinthe, which is associated with the Haut-Doubs.
