Montferrand-Le-Château: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The imposing ruins of Montferrand Castle stand 354 metres above the Doubs Valley. The outer fortification walls and the keep, which formerly served as the lord of the castle’s residence, have been preserved. The keep of the medieval castle stands on a rocky ledge 150 metres above the village and can be reached on foot. A viewpoint at the foot of the castle ruins is located on a 150-metre-high rocky summit overlooking the Doubs Valley.

History

The castle once included two chapels dedicated to Saint Nicholas and Saint Bartholomew.

The local history also includes the Montferrand glassworks, which produced luxurious tableware in the style of cut crystal glass. In 1862, it employed a total of 200 workers. It had already been established in 1859 on the foundations of the former Moulin Neuf and had a glass-polishing workshop with 150 polishing lathes.

Eight houses from the former workers’ settlement of Montferrand are still preserved on Rue des Cités and Rue des Salines. They were built around 1940 by the bleaching joint-stock company.

Nature

The circular “Crête et Bois Rapin” hike is moderately difficult, 10.2 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It starts and ends at the Aire de jeux de Montferrand-le-Château and leads to the banks of the Doubs and into the wild, flood-prone Bois Rapin area.

Hiking is designated as an activity in the “Corniches et prairies de Montferrand” area. A hiking trail runs along a limestone cliff, offering views of the meanders of the Doubs, accompanied by the characteristic scent of boxwood.

Local Life

Montferrand-le-Château is one of the venues for the Marché des 4 Villages, a rotating market organised jointly with Boussières, Thoraise and Grandfontaine. It takes place on the first Friday of every month from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., alternating between the four municipalities. At this market, local food and non-food producers and craftspeople offer a varied selection of high-quality products; there are also activities, performances, concerts and numerous activities for children and adults.
