Clerval: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Clerval lies in a landscape between mountains and rivers. Over the centuries, the town developed around a castle into a fortified town surrounded by walls. The Château de Clerval was built in the 12th century by Hugues de Chalon, Count of Burgundy, on the left bank of the Doubs. Its purpose was to monitor the passages through the gorge formed by the river through the Lomont Massif.

History

The Château de Clerval features a monumental fireplace, an oven, loopholes, staircases and preserved graffiti. The municipality had the château restored in 1987; today, it houses the Musée de la Mémoire et de la Paix. The Grotte de Milopet contains traces of human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period.

Culture

The Musée de la Mémoire et de la Paix commemorates the resistance groups of the Doubs Valley during the Second World War and also traces the history of the major conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum offers a child-friendly tour as well as regular guided tours and self-guided visits.

The Musée de la Cave de la Ville Haute presents exhibitions on the history of Clerval’s foundry. It is located in a cellar beneath a half-timbered house opposite the town hall.

Trails

The Circuit de la Chapelle starts at Place du Gravier next to an information board. After passing through a light forest, the circular trail reaches its highest point at 521 metres and offers a panorama of Clerval and the valley. It also crosses a slope that was formerly used as the vineyards of Clerval and Chaux.

The La Chapelle du Reposoir hike is a 5.7 km, two-hour circular route of moderate difficulty with 257 metres of elevation gain. The route leads to a viewpoint overlooking the entire municipality, the gorge and the valley.

Surroundings

On the EuroVelo 6 section between L’Isle-sur-le-Doubs and Baume-les-Dames, the route between Clerval and Roche-lès-Clerval partly follows the road. A campsite is located on the banks of the Doubs, where fishing is possible.
