Montbenoît lies on the left bank of the Doubs in the Val du Saugeais. Montbenoît Abbey has a cloister dating from the 12th and 15th centuries.
Culture and History
The cloister of Montbenoît’s Ancienne abbaye was protected as a historic monument in 1846 and again in 1914; the abbey church followed in 1922, with the exception of the bell tower. Montbenoît Abbey is the only surviving medieval religious building complex of comparable importance in the Doubs département.
The abbey is also home to the Musée de la République du Saugeais. It presents an overview of the République du Saugeais with educational panels, medals and various donated objects.

Routes
The Vy aux Moines is a medieval route established by monks from Môtiers in Switzerland in the 12th century to reach the canons of Montbenoît. It begins at Montbenoît Abbey. The French section is marked in yellow and blue and designated as a combined hiking and mountain-biking route.
The Chemin du Train is a Voie Verte created along the route of the former railway line between Pontarlier and Gilley. Since November 2012, it has had an asphalt surface along its entire length and is suitable for roller skates, roller skis and bicycles of all kinds.
Landscape
The Malsaron circular route is an easy 6.1-kilometre loop. It starts and ends at the abbey car park in Montbenoît, is marked in yellow and blue, and can also be ridden by mountain bike. Along the scenic Route de Chez Noël, the loop passes through an area with typical Comtois farmhouses decorated with traditional Tuyés.
