The Old Town of Segovia and its aqueduct were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The Roman aqueduct was probably built around AD 50 and is remarkably well preserved.

Culture

Segovia’s UNESCO World Heritage includes the Alcázar, whose construction began around the 11th century. A Gothic cathedral from the 16th century is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

The gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso contain monumental fountains with mythological lead sculptures; the hydraulic system originates from the lake “El Mar”.

The Hoces del Río Duratón Nature Park extends across the municipalities of Sepúlveda, Sebúlcor and Carrascal del Río in the province of Segovia.

The Hoces del Río Riaza Nature Park is located in the province of Segovia, covers approximately 5,185 hectares and partially includes the municipalities of Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela, Valdevacas de Montejo and Maderuelo.

Becerril has a stargazing site on the northern slope of the Sierra de Ayllón within the Natura 2000 network.

The mountains La Mujer Muerta, Peña del Oso peak and Montón de Trigo are located in the surrounding area of Segovia. Peña del Águila peak lies in the wider regional surroundings of Segovia.

Paths and Activities

The Camino de San Frutos is an 80-kilometre pilgrimage route between Segovia and the Ermita de San Frutos in Carrascal de Río. It has two route variants: one passes through 17 municipalities, while the other crosses 18 localities.

Guided canoe routes are offered in the protected area of the Hoces del Río Duratón Nature Park between the Monasterio de la Hoz and the Ermita de San Frutos. Canoe trips in the Hoces del Río Duratón Nature Park take place on the Burgomillodo reservoir downstream, between the Villaseca bridge and the dam.

La Pinilla has a cable car to the central area of the ski resort and can transport more than 12,000 skiers per hour.

Cuisine

Dishes such as roast suckling lamb and suckling pig are considered key components of Segovian cuisine. Ponche Segoviano is considered the most famous sweet speciality of the province of Segovia.

The Ruta del Cordero Asado is a gastronomic route that leads from the city of Segovia towards various places in the province, including Torrecaballeros, Turégano, Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Cuéllar, Sacramenia, Riaza and Coca.

The AP-61 connects Segovia with Madrid, while the A-601 connects Segovia with Valladolid.
