Castillejo de Mesleón: Culture, Landscape and Traditions

Castillejo de Mesleón first reveals its character through a clearly identifiable cultural monument: the Iglesia de la Asunción is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The building is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse; a Gothic sacristy, a bell tower and a portal were added later. In a single monument, these architectural elements combine Romanesque and Gothic features with a sacristy, tower and portal.

Culture

The Museo de La Fragua is a folk culture museum in Castillejo de Mesleón. It displays nearly 200 objects donated by local residents, covering blacksmithing, agriculture and livestock farming. A traditional forge and a horse-shoeing stand, the Fragua y potro de herrar, also stand together next to the frontón. The horse-shoeing stand was used to hold horses, donkeys or even cattle in place for shoeing or treatment. The collection thus ranges from craftwork and agriculture to animal husbandry; the forge and the horse-shoeing stand complement the objects with two specific facilities.

Traditions

The festivals of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción and San Roque take place on 15 and 16 August in Castillejo de Mesleón. They include processions accompanied by jota music, as well as traditional auctions of the carrying poles of the religious floats. The Cabalgata de Reyes has been celebrated for more than 35 years. Each year, its starting point and destination alternate between Castillejo de Mesleón, Santa Marta del Cerro, Cerezo de Abajo, Cerezo de Arriba and Sotillo. 15 August is the fixed period for the two aforementioned festivals, while the annual relocation of the Cabalgata de Reyes incorporates five places into the schedule.

Landscape

The erosion of the Río Serrano and its tributaries, Arroyo de Valarta and Río Valseco, exposed clayey slopes. On these slopes, karren and ravines developed at the Cárcavas de Castillejo de Mesleón. Another perspective on the area is offered by the Ruta de colores: this linear geotourism route runs through the northern foothills of the Sierra de Ayllón and the Sierra de Pela in the Province of Segovia and ends in Castillejo de Mesleón. In terms of landscape observation, watercourses, landforms and a linear route come together here. The Cárcavas represent the karren and ravines described above, while the Ruta de colores represents the connection through the northern foothills of the two sierras.

Cycling Routes

The Ruta Geológica - Cicloturismo is a 54.5-kilometre geological BBT cycling route starting in Riaza, with a moderate difficulty level. Its maximum elevation is 1,202 metres, and its minimum elevation is 921 metres. The route passes through the valley of Sotos De Sepúlveda to see red clay karren and ravines. The length, elevation figures and difficulty level each characterize the route in a different way: the 54.5 kilometres describe its extent, the figures from 921 to 1,202 metres indicate the two stated elevations, and the classification indicates the moderate difficulty level.
