Sebúlcor: Hoces del Duratón, Culture and Festivals

Hoces del Duratón was declared a nature park in 1989. In the area around Sebúlcor, the Duratón River cuts through the depths of a canyon due to the karstic nature of the terrain, forming Hoces del Duratón. The Duratón also crosses the municipality of Sebúlcor.

Nature

The Hoces consist of flat-bottomed gorges with limestone walls up to 100 metres high. The nature park is home to significant populations of birds of prey, including griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, golden eagles and goshawks. Its habitats include open stands of Spanish juniper and junipers, as well as riparian forests with willows, ash trees, poplars, elms and alders.

The information on nature therefore ranges from the geological formation of the canyon to the named habitats and birds of prey. Limestone walls, the river, open woodlands and riparian forests represent different features within the nature park, without belonging to a single type of landscape.

Culture and History

The Palacio de los González de Sepúlveda in San Miguel de Neguera, Sebúlcor, was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, more precisely to the end of the 15th century; it was founded by the González de Sepúlveda family.

The abandoned settlement of San Miguel de Neguera preserves the remains of an agricultural settlement and a mill by the river. A Visigothic necropolis dating from the 6th century is also located near Sebúlcor. The Convento de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de la Hoz was founded by the Franciscan Order in 1231.

The historical information covers different periods: the Palacio refers to the end of the 15th century, the necropolis to the 6th century and the Convento to the year 1231. The abandoned settlement supplements these testimonies with the remains of an agricultural settlement.

In the comarca, Sebúlcor is traditionally known as “los brujos” because of the long-standing activity of healers and practitioners providing therapeutic care.

Routes and Activities

Outdoor activity companies offer canoe tours in Sebúlcor. Stage IV of the Camino de San Frutos connects Pedraza with Sebúlcor.

The two forms mentioned differ in their nature: the canoe tours involve the Duratón as a watercourse in connection with a provider, while the Camino stage connects two places. Water-based activity and route are therefore described as separate considerations for travel planning.

Festivals

The celebrations of San Miguel Arcángel in Sebúlcor take place on 29 September and last four days. The Feria de la Cerveza Artesana is held on the first weekend of July; in addition to the beer brewed at the Fábrica artesana de Sebúlcor, around 25 craft breweries take part, accompanied by music and live concerts.
